「 radiance 」の語源

約1600年、「輝く光、放射状に広がる光線やビームの明るさ」という意味で使われ始めました。これは、形容詞の radiant から来ているか、あるいは中世ラテン語の radiantia（「明るさ」）から派生したものです。この言葉は radiare（「光を放つ、輝く」）に由来し、radiation でも見られます。美しさや喜びなどを表す比喩的な使い方は1761年から見られます。関連語として Radiancy があります。

Radiance ... is generally a light that is agreeable to the eyes; hence the word is often chosen for corresponding figurative expressions: as, the radiance of his cheerfulness; the radiance of the gospel.
