「 nous 」の語源

「知性、機知、賢さ、常識」といった意味で使われる大学のスラングで、1706年に登場しました。ギリシャ語のnousが語源で、アッティカ方言ではnoosと表記され、「心、知性、知覚、知力」を意味します。この言葉は、1670年代に英語の哲学用語として「知覚的で知的な能力」といった意味で取り入れられました。ギリシャ語の起源ははっきりしていませんが、Beekesは「おそらく古い名詞が形を変えたものだが、確かな語源は不明だ」と述べています。
