"일반적인 중요성을 가진 진리를 포함하는 짧고 간결한 진술" (예: "인생은 짧고, 예술은 길다")의 일반적인 의미는 1580년대 영어에서 발생. 자명한 진리의 진술인 axiom과 구별되며, epigram은 격언과 유사하지만 일반적인 중요성이 부족함. Maxim과 saying은 aphorism의 동의어로 사용될 수 있지만, 격언은 격언보다 더 실용적인 경향이 있으며, 속담은 더 일반적이고 저자의 이름이 붙어 있는 경향이 있음.
