gorilla 어원

1847년, 미국 선교사 토마스 새비지가 대형 유인원 종(Troglodytes gorilla)에 적용한 이름으로, 그리스어 gorillai에서 유래, 카르타고 항해사 한노의 북서 아프리카 연안 항해 기록을 그리스어로 번역한 책에서 거친 털을 가진 야생 존재들(현재는 침팬지로 추정됨)에게 주어진 이름의 복수형입니다. 이는 약 500기원전으로 추정됩니다. 아프리카의 단어로 전해졌다고 합니다.

In its inmost recess was an island similar to that formerly described, which contained in like manner a lake with another island, inhabited by a rude description of people.
