A tecnologia bem-sucedida foi desenvolvida nas décadas de 1920 e 1930. Nativizado em alemão como Fernsehen. Forma abreviada TV é de 1948; tee-vee por 1949. O significado "um aparelho de televisão" é de 1941. O significado "televisão como meio" é de 1927. Para os consumidores, televiewer (1935) e televisioner (1928) foram tentados.
