-red 的詞源

14世紀，“兄弟關係，同父母的兒子之間的關係”，來自 brother + -hood； 早期是 brotherhede（約1300年），以 maidenhead 的結尾； 而古英語中有 broþerrede，以 kindred 的結尾。現代形式的單詞從15世紀開始流行。

最初是“兄弟關係”，也是“友好的伴侶關係”。具體意義上的“男性爲任何目的而結成的團體，兄弟會”始於中古英語單詞（後來也是“工會”，1880年代）。意思是“同類個體的一類”始於1728年。意思是“團結全人類的社區感”始於1784年。古英語中還有 broðorscipe “兄弟關係”， broðorsibb “兄弟親屬關係”。
