Unitarian 的詞源

約公元1300年，unite，意指「成為一體的狀態或特性」，來自盎格魯法語的unite，古法語的unite，意為「獨特性、一致性」（約公元1200年），源自拉丁語的unitatem（主格為unitas），意指「一體性、相同性、協議」，而這又來自於unus，意為「一」（源自原始印歐語根*oi-no-，意指「一、獨特的」）。

最初在神學中使用，專指三位一體中的各位格；到14世紀末，則普遍用來表示「不可分割性、部分的和諧結合」。1580年代時，它被證實為「一個獨立的、單一的事物」。在藝術領域，the unities，指的是文學作品和戲劇中應該恰當維持的三個原則（時間、地點、行動），則出現於1660年代。

1731年，來自 infra - + 拉丁語 lapsus "a fall"（見 lapse（n.））+ 結尾來自 unitarian 等。
