nitrous 的詞源

大約1600年，“硝石的，與硝石有關的”，源自拉丁語 nitrosus，源自 nitrum（見 nitre）。在化學中更精確的用法（指一種化合物，其中氮的價比相應的 nitric 化合物低）始於1780年代。中古英語有“nitrose”“質地中含有硝石的； 苦澀，酸味”（15世紀早期）。Nitrous oxide “笑氣”於1800年被證明。

When inhaled it produces unconsciousness and insensibility to pain; hence it is used as an anesthetic during short surgical operations. When it is breathed diluted with air an exhilarating or intoxicating effect is produced under the influence of which the inhaler is irresistibly impelled to do all kinds of silly and extravagant acts; hence the old name of laughing-gas.
