staircase 的詞源

“容器，盒子，包含或裝載物品的東西”，早在14世紀，源自盎格魯-法語和古北法語 casse（古法語 chasse “盒子，聖骨箱”； 現代法語 châsse），來自拉丁語 capsa “盒子，貯藏室”（特別是放書的地方），源自 capere “拿，持”（源自 PIE 詞根 *kap- “抓住”）。

中古英語 steir，源自古英語 stæger “樓梯，階梯，一級級地排列在另一級之後和之上”，源自原始日耳曼語 *staigri（也是中古荷蘭語 stegher，荷蘭語 steiger “樓梯，臺階，碼頭，棧橋； 德語 Steig “小路”，古英語 stig “狹窄的小路”）。

這個詞的重建源於 PIE *steigh- “走，上升，跨步，踏步”（也是希臘語 steikhein “走，有序地行進”， stikhos “行，列，等級，詩句； 梵語 stighnoti “上升，踏步”； 古教會斯拉夫語 stignati “追趕”， stigna “地方”； 立陶宛語 staiga “突然”； 古愛爾蘭語 tiagaim “我走”； 威爾士語 taith “行進，步行，道路”）。

最初也是一個集體複數； stairs 在14世紀後期發展起來， stair 作爲“從一層到另一層的一系列臺階之一”是在1520年代。在升降尺度中的比喻意義始於公元1200年左右。
