これはラテン語の id est の略で、文字通り「それは～である」という意味です。英語では「つまり」や「言い換えれば」という意味で使われます。ラテン語の id は「それ」を意味し、これは印欧語の代名詞語幹 *i-（詳細は yon を参照）から来ています。est については is を参照してください。
