「 muscular 」の語源

1680年代、「筋肉に関するもの」という意味で、ラテン語の musculus（muscle (n.) を参照） + -ar から。この同じ意味での以前の用例は、musculous（15世紀初頭、ラテン語の musculosus から）。「たくましい、強い、発達した筋肉を持つ」という意味は1736年から。Muscular Christianity（1857年）は、元々、哲学者で聖公会の牧師、作家であるチャールズ・キンズリー（1819-1875年）に言及したもので、彼はその用語を拒否した。Muscular dystrophyは1877年から確認されている。
