「新聞や公刊物の執筆、編集、出版に関わる業務」という意味で使われるようになったのは1821年のこと。この言葉は当初、英語の中でフランス語の単語として認識されていました。フランス語のjournalisme（1781年）から来ており、さらにその語源はjournal「日刊誌」（journalを参照）に遡ります。また、journalistと比較することができます。

Because he had an early deadline, he telephoned a story that he was certain would take place: an angry crowd cursing the accused as he was marched to the courthouse from his holding cell at the police station. London then relaxed over lunch until he saw with dismay the guards and the prisoner coming but "not even the shadow of a gawker."
