1660年代、「彫像や絵画における人物の姿勢や位置」を意味し、フランス語の attitude（17世紀）を経て、イタリア語の attitudine「配置、姿勢」、さらに「適性、迅速性」から派生し、後期ラテン語の aptitudinem（主格 aptitudo、aptitudeを参照）に由来。
元々は17世紀の美術における専門用語であり、後に「ある精神状態を示すとされる体の姿勢」に一般化された（1725年）。「感情や意見を反映した定まった行動」という意味は1837年に生まれた。「習慣的な考え方を持つ」という意味は attitude of mind（1757年）の短縮形である。1962年にはスラングで「敵対的で非協力的な」という意味が発展した。
