acquired name (Russian, literally "debauchee") of Grigory Yefimovich Novykh (circa 1872-1916), a mystic and faith healer who had a significant influence over the court of Nicholas II of Russia. His nickname comes from his teaching of "rebirth through sin," which suggested that genuine holy communion could only follow a deep immersion in sin. Since 1937, his name has been used metaphorically in English to describe anyone believed to exert a harmful and corrupting influence.
