Uncle Tom 어원

"servile black man," 1922년, Harriet Beecher Stowe의 소설 "Uncle Tom's Cabin" (1852)에서 겸손하고 경건하지만 강한 의지를 가진 주인공을 다소 부정확하게 지칭한 표현. 이 모욕적인 이미지가 암시하는 바는 아마도 19세기 후반 민속극 쇼 버전의 이야기에서 더 잘 드러나며, 이는 책보다 훨씬 더 넓은 대중에게 전달되었다.

I don't recall anyone in the 1920s using the term 'Uncle Tom' as an epithet. But what's amazing is how fast it caught on (in the 1930s).
