superintendence 어원

1550년대, 원래는 "주교" 또는 "지구 내 교회를 감독하는 목사"를 의미하는 교회 용어로, 궁극적으로 그리스어 episkopos "감독자"의 차용 번역어이며, 중세 라틴어 superintendentem (주격 superintendens), 후기 라틴어 superintendere "감독하다"의 현재 분사, 라틴어 super "위에" (참조 super-) + intendere "주의를 기울이다, 지시하다" (참조 intend)에서 유래.

16세기 급진적 개신교도들이 bishop 대신 사용한 것으로 유명하며, 그들에게는 교황제에 의해 오염된 것으로 여겨졌다.
