15세기 초, veuer, "재산 조사 책임자, 감독, 시민 공무원," view (v.)에서 파생된 행위자 명사. "텔레비전 시청자"라는 의미는 1930년에 입증되었으며, 이전의 looker-in (1927), watcher-in (1928) 대신 사용됨.
