Jim Crow 的詞源

鳥類屬於 Corvus 屬的一般通稱（較大的種類有時被稱為 ravens），古英語 crawe，被認為是模仿鳥叫聲。比較古撒克遜語 kraia、荷蘭語 kraai、古高地德語 chraja、德語 Kräke。還有其他模仿鳥叫的名字，如希臘語 krex、krekos。

crow's foot這個形象用來形容隨著年齡增長在眼角出現的皺紋，來自14世紀末（「So longe mote ye lyve Til crowes feet be growen under youre ye." [Chaucer, Troilus and Criseyde, c. 1385]）。
