bard 的詞源

"古代凱爾特吟遊詩人"，15世紀中期，源自蘇格蘭語，來自古凱爾特語 bardos "詩人，歌手"，源自凱爾特語 *bardo-, 可能源自 PIE *gwredho- "讚美者" 的派生形式，是詞根 *gwere- (2) "支持" 的後綴形式。

在歷史時期，這是威爾士人非常尊重的稱號，但在蘇格蘭人中卻是一種蔑視（他們認爲他們是流浪的麻煩製造者）。後來，斯科特在更古老的意義上將其理想化爲“抒情詩人，歌手”。英語中的詩歌用法來自希臘語 bardos，拉丁語 bardus，兩者都來自高盧語。
