buff 的詞源

一種厚實柔軟的皮革，1570年代， buffe leather “由水牛皮製成的皮革”，源自法語 buffle “水牛”（15世紀，經由意大利語，源自拉丁語 bufalus； 參見 buffalo（n.））。

顏色詞“淺褐黃色”（1788年）來自於水牛皮的顏色。舊時對“獸皮”和“皮膚”的聯想導致了1600年左右的“裸體”的意義 in the buff。自1820年代以來，紐約市志願消防員的淡黃色制服導致了“狂熱者”的含義（1903年）。
