crocodile 的詞源

鱷魚，一種大型兩棲爬行動物，屬於 Crocodilia 目，1560年代，爲了符合拉丁語和法語的拼寫而重新拼寫，源自中古英語 cokedrille， cocodril， kokedrille 等（約1300年），源自古法語 cocodrille（13世紀）和中世紀拉丁語 cocodrillus，源自古典拉丁語 crocodilus，源自希臘語 krokodilos，這是一個起源不明的詞。根據希羅多德的說法，這是一種離子名字，用於指一種蜥蜴，後來被用來指鱷魚。Beekes 寫道，“Frisk 的詞源學認爲它是從[ krokē ] 'gravel'和[ drilos ] 'worm'（通過去音節）組成的複合詞，應該被遺忘。”
