descendant 的詞源

15世紀初，最初用於法律，“源於另一行動的行動”，源自形容詞（見 dependent）或法語中形容詞的名詞用法。從1580年代開始，它被用作“依賴他人支持或青睞的人”。

與其相關的 dependence 一樣，它與拉丁語影響下的變體（在這種情況下爲 dependent，源自拉丁語 dependere)共存到18世紀，但是對於這個詞來說，法語拼寫（對於形容詞和名詞都是 dpendant)在英語中更加持久，可能是因爲保留兩個詞，一個（dependant)用於名詞，另一個（dependent)用於形容詞。

但是，《世紀詞典》（1897）將所有意義都歸爲 dependent，並寫道：

As the spelling of this class of words depends solely upon whether they happen to be regarded as derived directly from the French or directly from the Latin, and as usage is divided, there is no good reason for insisting upon a distinction in spelling between the noun and the adjective ....

約於1300年， descenden，“從高處移動或通過到低處”，源自於古法語 descendre（10世紀）“下降，下馬； 跌入； 起源於”，並直接源自拉丁語 descendere “下來，下降，沉沒”，由 de “向下”（見 de-)和 scandere “攀爬”組成，源自於 PIE 詞根 *skand- “跳躍”（見 scan（v.））。
