finder 的詞源

古英語 findan"遇見，發現； 通過搜索或學習獲得"（第三類強動詞； 過去式 fand，過去分詞 funden），源自原始日耳曼語 *findan "遇見，發現"（也源自古撒克遜語 findan，古弗裏西亞語 finda，古諾爾斯語 finna，中古荷蘭語 vinden，古高地德語 findan，德語 finden，哥特語 finþan），最初的意思是 "遇見"。

這個日耳曼語詞源自 PIE 詞根 *pent- "踏，走"（也源自古高地德語 fendeo"步行者"； 梵語 panthah"道路，路徑"； 阿維斯塔語 panta"道路"； 希臘語 pontos"開放的海洋"， patein"踏，走"； 拉丁語 pons（屬格 pontis）"橋"； 古教會斯拉夫語 pǫti "路徑"， pęta "腳後跟"； 俄語 put' "路徑，道路"； 亞美尼亞語 hun"淺灘"，古普魯士語 pintis"道路"）。在日耳曼語中的史前意義可能是從 "走" 到 "發現"，但 Boutkan 對此表示嚴重懷疑。

在英語中，日耳曼語的 *-th- 傾向於在 -n- 後變成 -d-。日耳曼語初始輔音的變化來自格林姆定律。 find out 的意思是 "通過審查發現"，始於 1550 年代（中古英語有一個動詞 outfinden，意思是 "發現"，約於 1300 年左右）。
