herb 的詞源

這是一個古老的詞，用來指任何植物、草藥、蔬菜、根類等。它源自古英語的 wyrt，意思是「根、草藥、蔬菜、植物、香料」，而其前身則是原始日耳曼語的 *wurtiz（這個詞也出現在古撒克遜語的 wurt、古北歐語、丹麥語的 urt、古高地德語的 wurz，都意指「植物、草藥」；德語的 Wurz、哥特語的 waurts、古北歐語的 rot 則是「根」的意思）。這些詞都源自原始印歐語的詞根 *wrād-，意指「分支、根」。
