hindrance 的詞源

古英語 hindrian “傷害，損害，削弱，檢查，壓制”，源自原始日耳曼語 *hinderojan（源頭還包括古諾爾斯語 hindra，古弗裏西亞語 hinderia，荷蘭語 hinderen，古高地德語 hintaron，德語 hindern “阻止”），是一個從意思上來看是“在那邊，後面”的詞根的派生動詞（參見 hind（形容詞））； 因此，其基本含義是“把某物放在後面或保持在後面”，儘管這個意義在英語中只有在14世紀後期纔有記錄。相關詞彙： Hindered； hindering。

“word-forming element attached to verbs to form abstract nouns of process or fact (從 converge 中得到的 convergence), or of state or quality (從 absent 中得到的 absence); 最終源自拉丁語 -antia 和 -entia，這取決於詞幹中的元音，源自 PIE *-nt-，形容詞後綴。”

拉丁語中，用於動詞詞幹 -a- 的現在分詞詞尾與 -i- 和 -e- 中的詞尾有所區別。因此，現代英語中的 protest a nt， oppon e nt， obedi e nt 源自拉丁語 protestare， opponere， obedire。

隨着古法語從拉丁語演變而來，這些詞尾被統一爲 -ance，但後來從拉丁語借用的法語詞彙（其中一些後來傳入英語）使用了適當的拉丁語詞尾形式，同樣，英語直接從拉丁語借用的詞彙也使用了這種形式（diligence , absence）。

因此，英語從法語繼承了一大堆混亂的詞彙（crescent / croissant），並且自15世紀以來，通過有選擇地恢復這些詞彙的某些形式中的 -ence 以符合拉丁語，進一步增加了混亂。因此， dependant，但 independence，等等。
