panel 的詞源

14世紀初，“一塊布料”，尤其是矩形的一塊，來自古法語 panel “一塊布料，一塊，馬鞍墊”（現代法語 panneau），源自通俗拉丁語 *pannellus，是拉丁語 pannus “一塊布料”的小型詞（參見 pane）。

盎格魯-法語法律術語中“列出被傳喚爲陪審團服務的人名的羊皮紙（布）”的意義，到14世紀末演變爲“爲審判選定的陪審團”的意義。一般意義上的“被召喚爲顧問、法官、討論者等的人”始於1570年代。指“牆壁、門等表面的或多或少明顯的部分”的意義記錄於約1600年。

Panel-house（據說來自19世紀40年代； 從19世紀70年代開始流行）是指一個名聲不好的地方（通常是妓院），有帶面板的房間。至少可以滑動一個面板以允許從顧客那裏盜竊和其他欺騙行爲。因此有 panel-thief， panel-game 等。

The requisites for a "panel house" in the proper sense, are,—a crafty, cunning street walker; a not less cunning and at the same time sturdy scoundrel—known in the slang of the business as a "Badger," and a room prepared specially for the purpose by having a small invisible opening, generally a noiselessly opening panel in the partition or entrance door, by which access to the place can be had from an adjoining room. These three requisites obtained, it becomes the duty of the panel-thief to find the fourth in any "greenhorn" that can be picked up on the streets and induced to come into the apartment.
