philosophy 的詞源

公元1300年左右， philosophie，"知識，學問，學術著作，知識體系"，源自古法語 filosofie "哲學，知識"（12世紀，現代法語 philosophie），直接源自拉丁語 philosophia,，又源自希臘語 philosophia "對知識的熱愛，對智慧的追求； 系統的研究"，由 philo- "熱愛"（見 philo-）和 sophia "知識，智慧"組成，源自 sophis "聰明的，有學問的"； 這是一個起源不明的詞語[Beekes]。中古英語中有許多拼寫變體（filozofie, phelosophie 等）。

In 1744 he made an unsuccessful attempt to obtain a professorship at Edinburgh; having failed in this, he became first a tutor to a lunatic and then secretary to a general.
