standing 的詞源

13世紀中，stonding，意為「直立的行為或事實」，作為動詞stand (v.) 的名詞形式。到14世紀末，意為「基礎或根基」，也指「職位，職務」，以及「停止的行為」；約公元1400年起，意為「位置；固定不動的行為」。

在「排名，地位，相對位置」的意義上，記錄於1570年代。1570年代也用於「服務年限，外貌等」。1650年代起有「存在一段時間的狀態」的意義。法律意義記錄於1924年。體育意義來自1881年。

in good standing的表達始於1789年。Standing room「僅夠站立的空間」始於1788年，最初指劇院。SRO「僅限站立空間」的縮寫證實於1890年。

A young gentleman attempting to get into Drury-lane play-house, found there was such a croud of people that there was no room.
