1914年戰爭開始後不久便應用於第一次世界大戰（「英國已與法國結盟參加世界大戰」——《匹茲堡郵報》，1914年8月2日）。World War I於1939年創造，取代了Great War作為最常見的名稱；First World War、World War II和Second World War也均來自1939年。

古英語中有woruldgewinn、woruldgefeoht，都可以翻譯為「世界大戰」，但「世界」在此意為「世俗的，塵世的」。
