「 betweenity 」の語源

中世英語の bitwene は、古英語の betweonum やマーシアン方言の betwinum に由来し、「分かれた空間に、真ん中に、間に、交互に」といった意味を持ちます。これは bi-（「〜のそばに」、by を参照）と、tweonum（*tweon の与格複数形で「二つずつ」、ゴート語の tweih-nai「二つずつ」と同様、印欧語根 *dwo-「二」を基にしています）から来ています。

Between is literally applicable only to two objects; but it may be and commonly is used of more than two where they are spoken of distributively, or so that they can be thought of as divided into two parts or categories, or with reference to the action or being of each individually as compared with that of any other or all the others. Between a rock and a hard place（「ジレンマに陥る、困難な状況にいる」）は1940年代のカウボーイスラングに由来し、以前は between the beetle (hammer) and the block（「ビートル（ハンマー）とブロックの間にいる」）と呼ばれていました（19世紀後半）。Between-whiles（「間隔をおいて、時折」）は1670年代の表現です。

形容詞から抽象名詞を作る語形成要素で、「______である状態や質」を意味し、中英語の-ite、古フランス語の-ete（現代フランス語の-ité）およびラテン語の-itatem（主格-itas）から直接派生した接尾辞で、状態や条件を示します。これは-i-（幹からまたは接続詞として）+ 一般的な抽象名詞接尾辞-tas（-ty (2)を参照）で構成されています。
