「 dewlap 」の語源

また、dew-clawは「いくつかの犬の後ろ足に見られる、発達が不十分な内側の指」を指し、1570年代に使われ始めました。この言葉はclaw（爪）から来ていますが、最初の部分の意味ははっきりしていません（dewlapと比較）。

古英語のlæppa（複数形læppan）「衣服のスカートやフラップ」は、原始ゲルマン語の*lapp-（古フリジア語のlappa、古ザクセン語のlappo、中世オランダ語のlappe、オランダ語のlap、古高ドイツ語のlappa、ドイツ語のLappen「布切れ、破れた布」、古ノルド語のleppr「パッチ、ボロ布」から）は起源が不確かなものです。

「シャツやスカートの前面下部」の意味は、「座っている人の上部脚」の意味（約1300年）に発展しました。14世紀後半からは比喩的に（「富の恵み、胸、誰かまたは何かが大切にされ、愛される場所」という意味で）使用され、lap of luxury（最初の記録は1802年）などがあります。1962年からはdropやdumpをin someone's lap「負担を移すこと」という意味で使われました。15世紀から17世紀にかけて、この言葉（しばしば複数形で）は「女性の性器」を表す婉曲的表現でしたが、lap dance（最初の記録は1993年）の起源ではありません。

Lap-clapは「性交の行為」を表す古いスラング（約1600年）で、若者への警告表現としてしばしばlip-clip「キス」と対になっていました。また、スラングのLapland「女性の社会」と比較できます。

In anatomy, lap is attested by late 14c. as "loose end or lobe of flesh" (as in dewlap) and from 15c.-17c. lap (often in plural) was a euphemism for "female pudendum." but this is likely not the immediate source of lap-dance.

Lap-clap was old slang for "an act of coition" (c. 1600), in warning expressions to youth often paired with lip-clip "a kiss." Also compare slang Lapland "the society of women."
