「 impersonator 」の語源

1833年には「他の人やキャラクターを体現する者」として、1840年には「（何かに）個性を吹き込む者」、1842年には「舞台で役を演じる俳優」として使われるようになりました。この言葉は、impersonate（なりすます）にラテン語風の名詞接尾辞が付いたものです。「他の人のマナーや話し方を模倣する者」という意味は、1921年までに娯楽目的のものとして定着したと考えられます。これは、おそらく古い演劇用語であるfemale impersonator（女性なりすまし）やmale impersonator（男性なりすまし）から派生したもので、どちらもかつて人気のあるステージアクトでした。特に後者の初期の例としては、1870年頃に流行したエラ・ウェスナー（Miss Ella Wesner）が挙げられます。イギリスでは、黒塗りのパフォーマーはnegro impersonators（黒人なりすまし）と呼ばれていました（1906年）。女性形のimpersonatrix（なりすまし女性）はラテン語風に1847年に作られ、フランス語風のimpersonatress（なりすまし女性）は1881年に登場しました。
