14世紀中頃には「物質世界の力またはプロセス; 生物を生み出し秩序を維持するもの」として使われ、14世紀後半には「創造、宇宙」としても使われた。また「遺伝、誕生、 hereditary circumstances; 本質的特性、固有の構成、先天的性質」（例：human nature）や「自然の擬人化、母なる自然」とも。Natureとnurtureはシェイクスピアの「テンペスト」以来、対比されてきた。
