「 periphrastic 」の語源

「回りくどい言い方；その例」、1530年代の用語で、ラテン語の periphrasis（「回りくどい表現」）から派生し、さらにギリシャ語の periphrasis（「回りくどく話すこと」）に由来します。この言葉は、periphrazein（「回りくどく話す」）から来ており、peri（「周りに、あちこちに」、peri-を参照）と phrazein（「表現する」、phrase (n.)を参照）を組み合わせたものです。

Periphrasis is also known as circumlocution; but the term periphrasis generally refers to those cases where the figure is used with effect, while "circumlocution" refers to its faulty use.
