「 plenteous 」の語源

1300年頃、plenteivousは「肥沃な、実り豊かな、多産な」という意味で使われました。これは古フランス語のplentivosやplentiveus（13世紀初頭で「肥沃な、豊かな」といった意味）から来ており、さらに遡るとplentif（「豊富な」）やplentee（「豊富さ」）に由来します（plentyを参照）。14世紀後半からは「豊富な、たくさんの、豊潤な」といった意味でも使われるようになり、現代的な形は同じく14世紀後半に定着しました。関連語としてはPlenteously（豊富に）、plenteousness（豊かさ）などがあります。

plenteous, -iful. As with other pairs in -eous & -iful (e.g. from bounty, beauty, duty, pity), the meaning of the two is the same, but the -eous word is the less common & therefore better suited to the needs of poetry & exalted prose ; for these it should be reserved. [Fowler, 1926]
