「 solstice 」の語源

「一年に二度、太陽が赤道から最も遠くなる時期」、13世紀中頃、古フランス語のsolstice（13世紀）から、ラテン語のsolstitium「太陽が静止しているように見える点」、特に夏至から、sol「太陽」（PIEルート*sawel-「太陽」から）+ sistere「静止する、立ち止まる; 設定する、置く、立たせる」の過去分詞幹（PIEルート*sta-「立つ、固める」からの重複形から）。初期の使用では、英語化されてsunstead（後期古英語のsunstede）と呼ばれた。
