"태양 주위를 큰 타원 궤도로 도는 천체의 일종," 1200년경, 고대 프랑스어 comete (12세기, 현대 프랑스어 comète)에서 유래, 라틴어 cometa에서, 다시 그리스어 (aster) komētēs에서 유래, 문자 그대로는 "긴 머리의 별"이라는 의미로, komē는 "머리카락"을 뜻함 (비교: koman "머리카락을 길게 기르다"). 이 단어의 정확한 기원은 알려져 있지 않지만, 혜성의 꼬리가 흩날리는 머리카락과 닮았기 때문에 붙여진 이름이다.
