1580년대에는 "자격이나 재능이 갖춰진"이라는 의미로, 1590년대에는 "어떤 정도의 제한이나 변화를 겪은"이라는 뜻으로 사용되었어요. 이는 qualify (동사)에서 파생된 과거 분사 형용사입니다. 1886년부터 20세기 중반까지는 영국 영어에서 bloody나 damned의 완곡어법으로 쓰였죠.
