Mac 的詞源

該前綴常用於蘇格蘭和愛爾蘭姓氏中，源自古凱爾特語的“*makko-s”，意爲“兒子”。派生詞“*makwos”也表示“兒子”，在古威爾士語中變爲“map”，在威爾士語中變爲“mab”，在“ap”中變成“兒子”； 同時可能與古英語的“mago”（兒子，僕人，公僕）、古諾爾斯語的“mögr”（兒子）、哥特語的“magus”（男孩，僕人）和古英語的“mægð”（僕人女）有關（見 maiden）。

先前 比較常見方式是以“M'”縮寫，並在後面跟上一個大寫字母； 或拼寫爲“Mac”，然後很少使用大寫字母； 例如，“M'Donald, Macdonald, McDonald”。

威爾士家譜和姓名中的父系成分，早期爲 map “兒子”，與蓋爾語 mac 同源。自17世紀起合併爲姓氏，並縮寫爲 P- 或 B-（Ap Rhys = Price， Ap Evan = Bevan， Bowen = Ap Owen 等）。
