austere 的詞源

中古英語 sere，指的是“乾枯的，枯萎的，貧瘠的”（指植物等），源自古英語 sear,，來自原始日耳曼語 *sauzas（也是中古低地德語 sor 、荷蘭語 zoor 的來源），源自 PIE 詞根 *saus- “乾燥”（也是梵語 susyati “乾燥，枯萎”； 古波斯語 uška- “乾燥”（形容詞），“土地”（名詞）； 阿維斯陀語 huška- “乾燥”； 希臘語 auos “乾燥”， auein “使乾燥”； 拉丁語 sudus “乾燥”）與 sear 相關。引申義於1530年代。Sere month 是“八月”的舊稱。

14世紀中期，“嚴厲，苛刻”，源自14世紀的古法語 austerite “嚴酷，殘忍”，直接源自拉丁語 austeritatem（主格 austeritas），源自 austerus “嚴厲，刻板”，在古典拉丁語中是一種比喻用法，表示“嚴厲，酸澀”（參見 austere）。

從1580年代開始，“嚴格的自我約束，禁慾修行”； 因此，在第二次世界大戰期間，被應用於限制非必需品的國家政策，以實現戰時經濟。
