cobble 的詞源

“N.E.D.認可八個名詞 cob，有許多子組。像其他方言中常見的單音節詞一樣，它的歷史是不可分的”[Weekley]。在第二版印刷中，這個數字增加到了11個。一些意義可能來自古英語 copp “頂部，頭部”，另一些可能來自古諾爾斯語 kubbi 或低地德語，所有這些詞都可能追溯到一個原始日耳曼語基礎 *kubb- “圓形物體”。

在最早的英語意義中，有“頭領，首領”和“雄天鵝”兩個意義，都出現在15世紀早期，但姓氏 Cobb（1066）表明古英語使用了這個詞的一種形式作爲“大，領先的人”的綽號。 “玉米芽”意義可追溯到1680年代。
