cruiser 的詞源

1670年代，“巡航者或巡航物”，是從 cruise（動詞）派生的代詞，或者可能是從大陸語言中類似的詞語（如荷蘭語 kruiser，法語 croiseur）借來的。在早期的用法中，是指一艘用於巡航和保護所屬國家商業貿易或追擊敵對船隻的戰艦（但在18世紀常常用於私掠船）。
