epeiric 的詞源

“大陸架被海洋覆蓋”的說法最早出現於1915年，源自希臘語 ēpeiros “大陸、陸地、大洲”（與海洋和島嶼相對），源自 PIE 詞根 *apero- “海岸”（也是 Old English ofer “岸、邊緣、海岸”、Old Frisian over “岸”的來源）+ -ic。

As the term "continental deposits" in this sense is now ingrained in Geology, we can no longer use Dana's "continental seas" without raising a question in the mind as to what is meant when their deposits are considered. For this reason we propose here to use epeiric seas (meaning seas that lie upon the continents) for the bodies of water that lie within the continents in the downwarps of the continental masses.
