"act of making into a paste; that which is made into paste," 1730, perhaps via French impastation, from Medieval Latin impastationem (nominative impastatio), noun of action from past-participle stem of impastare (see impaste). Oldest reference in English is to masonry, "work made of stone beaten to powder and worked up into a paste and hardened."

1540s, "make into a paste, enclose in paste;" 1727 in painting, "to lay on thickly and boldly," also empaste, from Medieval Latin impastare "put or cook in paste or dough," from Latin in- "on" (see in- (2)) + Late Latin pasta "paste" (see pasta, and compare impasto). Related: Impasted; impasting.
