imperial 的詞源

源自古法語 empire “統治，權威，王國，帝國統治”（11世紀），源自拉丁語 imperium “規則，命令； 權威，控制，權力； 至高無上的權力，唯一的統治； 軍事權力； 領土，領域”，源自 imperare “命令”，源自 in- 的同化形式“在”（源自 PIE 根 *en “在”）+ parare “命令，準備”（源自 PIE 根 *pere- （1）“生產，獲得”）。

在詞源上並不僅限於“由皇帝統治的領土”，但通常以此方式使用。The Empire，意爲“大英帝國”，首次記錄於1772年（在1931年正式演變爲“英聯邦”）； 在此之前，它指的是神聖羅馬帝國（1670年代）。
