lantern 的詞源

1680s, in reference to a large species of insect in South America. Early European naturalists there reported incorrectly that in the dark it emitted strong light from its elongated head. Also lanthorn-fly; see lantern (n.) + fly (n.1).

The smaller Chinese species (also Chinese lantern-carrier) is attested by the name in English by 1771; it was grouped by Linnaeus with the American species in the genus fulgora, based on the elongated head and the supposition they all could emit light. The spotted lantern fly has been an invasive species in Northeastern U.S. from 2014.
