pennyfarthing 的詞源

古英語 feorðing（古北安布里亞語 feorðung）“一便士的四分之一； 四分之一”，是 feorða “第四”（來自 feower “四”； 來自 PIE 詞根 *kwetwer- “四”）的一種減小衍生詞，加上 -ing “分數部分”。同源詞有古弗裏西亞語 fiardeng，中低地德語 verdink，古挪威語 fjorðungr，古丹麥語 fjerdung “任何東西的四分之一”。

英國的硬幣，中古英語爲 peni，源自古英語 pening， penig，諾森布里亞方言 penning，意爲“便士”，源自原始日耳曼語 *panninga-（也源自古挪威語 penningr，瑞典語 pänning，丹麥語 penge，古弗裏西亞語 panning，古薩克森語 pending，中古荷蘭語 pennic，荷蘭語 penning，古高地德語 pfenning，德語 Pfennig，哥特語中沒有記錄，而是使用 skatts），其起源不明。

1868年，源自 bi- “兩個”和希臘語 kyklos “圓圈，輪子”的拉丁化形式（參見 cycle（n.）），按照 tricycle 的模式，這個詞和車輛取代了早期的 velocipede。
