returnable 的詞源

14世紀初，returnen，「回來，回到以前的位置」（不及物動詞），來自古法語 retorner, retourner「回轉，返回」（現代法語 retourner），由 re-「回」（參見 re-）+ torner「轉」（參見 turn (v.)）組成。部分來源於中世紀拉丁語 retornare, returnare。

「正式報告，給出官方聲明或帳目」（回答傳票或要求）的及物動詞意義始於15世紀初；「將（某人或某物）送回」始於15世紀中；「回轉」的意義始於1500年左右。「作為償還或補償」的意義始於1590年代；「歸還，恢復」的意義始於1600年左右。相關詞：Returned；returning。

也稱 nonreturnable，1896年起源於保險業，意爲“不可退還的”，由 non- 和 returnable 組成。1926年開始用於包裝領域。
