shire 的詞源

14世紀中期，“郡，一個爲政治和行政目的而確定的國家或州的明確劃分”，來自盎格魯-法語 counte，源自晚期拉丁語 comitatus “伯爵的管轄區”，源自拉丁語 comes（見 count（n.1））。它取代了古英語 scir “郡”。

從14世紀末開始，“伯爵或伯爵的領地”。County palatine，一種具有特殊特權的區域（蘭開斯特，切斯特，達勒姆）始於15世紀中期。County seat “縣政府所在地”於1848年出現在美國英語中。

1086年， Cestre Scire，源自 Chester 和 scir “地區”（見 shire）。Cheshire cat 及其諺語般的微笑可追溯至1770年，但其意義不明確。
