splendor 的詞源

1620年代，"壯觀的，宏偉的"，可能是早期的 splendidious "美妙的華麗的" (15世紀早期)，源自拉丁語 splendidus "明亮的，閃閃發光的； 華麗的，美麗的，宏偉的； 傑出的，尊貴的，高貴的； 華而不實的，好看的，華美的"，源自 splendere "發光，照耀，閃閃發亮"。

一個早期形式是 splendent， splendaunt (15世紀晚期，來自拉丁語 splendentem，過去分詞形式 splendere)。 Splendid 自1640年代起，被用作 "明亮的，耀眼的； 也用於指 "顯着的，傑出的； 非常好的，優秀的"。反諷用法（如 splendid isolation，1843）最早見於17世紀。 Jonson 使用了擴展形式 splendidous 和 splendidious。
